Julia, who was my nanny when I was a kid, poses in her apartment’s bedroom in the town of Korolyov in the Moscow Region, where she has lived since 1937. She was ten years old when the Second World War changed the lives of her and her family. Despite her difficult childhood, the years of starvation and the loss of her father, she still managed to get a higher education and winnumerous ski competitions. After graduation, she worked in the field of power engineering her whole life and raised a son on her own. Now she is retired and lives alone in a three-room apartment. Her son is a priest, who comes to visit her several times a year. May 2018.
